summary

The monograph Place Indentity in Urbanism attempts to present a specific translation od the subjective and ephemeral place identity into a very pragmatic architectonic reality. The research area of this dissertation is architectural and urban space. As interdisciplinary nature of perceiving urban space and its functioning in three strata (economin, social and spacial) allow the author to concentrate on a considerably important issue - a dialogue which takes place between the user and the urban space. The reason for subjecting such place communication to analysis is the increasingly growing need for building an expressive urban space. The significance of the undertaken analysed issue stems from the observation of the urban reality. The author also examines accomplishments of an expanding group of courageous designers, architects and artists, who creatively preform in city spaces.

Despite the subjectivity of the notion of place identity there exist many the ories which attempt at defining the notion. Each of the theories emphasizes, due to its author's sensitivity, the exceptional quality and uniqueness of a place identity. The theories cited in Place Identity in Urbanism accentuate, with a smaller of larger degree of enthusiasm, indicate the value of human senses. Both, art and architecture exist owing to senses. The state of the art discussed by the author and supplemented by her observations is to convince urbanism pragmatists of the validity of the postulated theses. The aim of the dissertation is encourage architects to use types of records of emotions in their project of buildings and to create communcication in relations between the space and itd user.

On the basis of the state of the art the author develops a definition of a subjective notion of place identity. Her interests and travels let the author experience the described places in a tangible way. The experiences associated with observations of interesting, often degraded places, stimulated the author to pose questions concerning the problem of the value of the space subjected to observation. The fundamental notion of place identity is presented from behavioural, historical and legal piont of view. Important are also the conclusions resulting from analyses of Architectural Biennale in Venice, the Athens Charter and the legal reality. Despite the subjectivity of the notion of place identity, the author defines possibilities of its specific application, its role and place in the revalorization processes. In her considerations and searches the author attempts to find a practical translation of the meaning of place identity. Through the prism of her professional experience as an architect, the author indicates a proper project way of designing, a way which is safe while analysing such subtle and subjective issues.

The work book is composed of two parts. The first part is of theoretical and reflective character which stems from the state of the art in the scope of place identity. The author justifies the importance of describing emotions, meanins and imagery of the urban space in relations to other urban notions. She presents the connections asserting that they occupy a significant place in the whole structure of urban studies. As a result, the author suggests her own method of applying place identity to spatial creation.

The second part of the work contains projects which, in the phase of concept development, involved the search for a significant and worth adapting value in the process of place creation. The analyses of the presented examples of projects encompass the rules of extraction of such factors and of their subsequent application afterwards. The author's projects concern revalorization activities with the use of place identity as a tool. The projects subject matter came from culturally and geographically diffrent cities in the Silesian Voivodeship. Their diversity resulting from their size and problems caused by contemporary economic transformations testifies to the need for emphasizing the importance of place identity in urban processes.
